Road Transport in Brighton and Hove.

Terminology

  • Trams run on rails and can be powered by a variety of methods, including overhead electrical cables or being hauled by steam engines or horses.
  • Buses are self-contained road vehicles.
  • Trolleybuses are buses powered by overhead cables, like electric trams, but without needing tracks.

A lot of local tram systems around the country were dismantled in World War Two, as the overhead infrastructure meant that they were very exposed to damage by aerial bombing, and because tearing up and melting down the track made a lot of metal available for the war effort.
