Range

This collection charts the early evolution of Dinky Toys from its launch in 1934, to around 1958.

This covers the earliest period of Dinky Toys, from some of the first 1930s MAZAC-cast vehicles (replacing the small earlier range of lead-cast Hornby Modelled Miniatures) to the period when Dinky started having to add plastic windows and other plastic parts to compete with the new competing Corgi Toys and Spot-On ranges from Mettoy and Lines Brothers in the 1950s.

Provenance

The core collection is on loan from the collection of the late John Durrant.

Upgrades

2021:

The "Dinky" display backs onto the new 2021 "Dollhouses and dollhouse furniture" display, the centrepiece of which is an achingly-rare "Dolly Varden" dollhouse, made by Meccano Ltd. to hold their range of Dinky dollhouse furniture.

Since this range bridges both display subjects, the museum has decided to take an inspired (or crazy) approach to showing this: by cutting a dollhouse-shaped hole through the backs of both cabinets, and plugging the hole with the Dolly Varden dollhouse. The dollhouse front is then visible from the "Dollhouses ..." display side, and the individual rooms with the Dinky furniture are visible from the "Dinky ..." display side.

2020:

The Dinky cabinet's 2020 upgrade saw some items replaced by better-quality examples, and some "holes" in the collection filled.

As a result, the green Dinky military vehicles have been displaced from their shelf, and will be off-display until we can think of somewhere else to put them.
