location:

Arch Two , Area 72
Arch Two, Overhead

A motorised retail display unit dating from the late 1960s or 1970s, designed to show off the then-current Dinky Toys aircraft range.

The display holds twelve diecast Dinky Toys, and has them “flying” in formation, along two circular paths.

Construction

The display unit has a large motor housed in a box fabricated from yellow Meccano plates edged with silver Meccano strips, fixed to a large dark-painted (black?) baseboard for stability). Protruding from the top of the box in one vertical central vertical rod (to hold a display card), and twelve angled rods, as two sets of six, at two levels, each of which has an angled threaded end, onto which a Dinky plane has been crewed, tightened with a square Meccano nut.
