History
Built between 1941 and 1945, the P-38 was a heavy fighter with distinctive twin fuselages and a single, central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. Unusually quiet for a fighter, it was very forgiving, and could be mishandled in many ways, but the rate of roll in early versions made it too slow for it to excel as a dogfighter. The Lockheed Lightning was the sole American fighter aircraft in production throughout American involvement in the Second World War, from Pearl Harbor to Victory over Japan Day. 10,037 were built.
