Card No. 47: The Grand Tour

1977

The Grand Tour is a proposal by NASA for a reconnaissance mission in 1977-1978 to the outer planets of the solar system – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

It is the most ambitious unmanned space project known at the present time. In 1977 the relative position of the five planets will be such that a 2,000 pound spacecraft, launched by a relatively small rocket, may be accelerated by gravity, as it passes each planet in turn, to such a speed that the journey to Neptune, which normally would take eighteen years, could be achieved in only nine years.
