Card No. 41  : The DORNIER "WAL" (Germany)

The "Wal" or "Whale" is a long-range twin-engined flying-boat designed for the carriage of passengers and freight on the German route across the South Atlantic. It is a graceful machine of quite high performance (cruising speed about 130 mph.) and is able to operate from heavy seas. The hull is divided into seven water-tight compartments. Behind the pilot's cockpit is a navigating room and behind that is a commodious mail or passenger cabin. A bigger type, known as the "Super-Wal" and fitted with four engines is used for passenger work on European routes.
