Skybirds Aerodrome

1932 - 1940s

Just as the middle-1930s was an exciting time for steam locomotion, with newer and faster and more modern locos appearing almost every year, it was also a revolutionary time for air transport, with new developments year-on-year. This period saw the invention of the modern aircraft control tower, the first radio station for weather forecasting, new huge concrete hangar designs, and new aerodrome support infrastructure and support vehicles. With civilian airfields starting to come into their own, and the emergence of a strong amateur flying community (boosted by the record-breaking exploits of daring flyers like Amy Johnson, and the appearance of the popular deHavilland Moth), a whole new industry sector appeared.

Imperial Airways were now operating out of new facilities at Croydon and trying to act as a hub to support the combined territories of the British Empire, and Heston Air Park opened to supply the needs of the hobbyist flyer.
