Card No. 12: Zond

18th July 1965

Several unmanned Russian spacecraft have been launched to the Moon and planets. Zond 3, sent into orbit round the Sun on July 18, 1965, took pictures of the Moon’s far side as it passed.

Between Sept. 15-21, 1968, Zond 5 made the first unmanned flight around the Moon and back to Earth, landing its capsule by parachute to the Indian Ocean. Its ‘passengers’ included turtles, wine flies, mealworms, lysogenic bacteria and various plants and seeds.

Zond 6 and 7, in Nov. 1968 and Aug. 1969 made similar circumlunar flights, but were recovered in the Soviet Union.
