The Scale Model Engineering Company ("SME", or "SMEC") was founded in 1946 in Steyning, West Sussex.

The company initially made scale model parts, such as model railways signalling and model car kits, but began to move more to being a more general purpose engineering company in the 1950s.

The company is still going, and nowadays concentrates on niche areas such as precision hifi engineering (turntables and pickup arms) and medical technologies.

SMEC's older "model engineering" pieces (as the company's name suggests) were very nicely engineered, and were priced accordingly.
