History

The Dornier Do 217 was a bomber built as a more powerful version of the Dornier Do 17 "Fliegender Bleistift" (Flying Pencil) . 1,925 were built between 1940 and 1943, with a much larger bomb capacity and much greater range than the Do 17 , as well as, in later variants, dive bombing and maritime strike capabilities using glide bombs. The Do 217 as a strategic bomber, torpedo bomber and reconaissance aircraft with tactical functions performed all roles on all fronts. No complete aircrafty survives today.
