Evans and Cartwright

1816 - ~1880

John Evans was listed as a toymaker in 1816, and by the 1820s the business that he built up with Sidney Cartwright was at its peak, with a three-figure number of employees. The business then took another fifty years of slow decline before it finally closed, at an indeterminate date around three-quarters of the way through the Nineteenth Century, partly due to general problems exporting and partly because of stiff competition due to the growth of metal toy manufacturing in Southern Germany.

A selection of Evans and Cartwright dollhouse furniture will be appearing in the museum's new Dollhouse furniture display, during 2016.
