In some situations we need to be able to study how complex articulated shapes behave

  • An artist's mannequin is typically a simple jointed wooden human figure with a stand. These models have simplified, abstract curves, and reproduce (most) joint movement combinations. Their purpose is to allow the artist to set a realistic human pose that can then be used as a reference for a painting or drawing. The artist can then concentrate on the artistic details of the illustration, knowing that the result will be spatially correct in three dimensions.
  • A tailor's mannequin is usually just a lifesize torso (and perhaps head), with hips and shoulders, adjustable to a range of bodyshapes.
  • A shop window mannequin is usually a complete lifesize human figure (often posable) used to show off clothes in context. Faces tend to be deliberately slightly abstract, as the potential customer is supposed to be looking at the clothes rather then the model (and may like to imagine themselves in the role portrayed by the model).
  • Stop-motion animation models
