The Brighton Festival, held every May, has been a key part of the Brighton calendar since it started in 1968 (with the exception of the 2020 Festival, which was cancelled due to the global COVID-19 outbreak).

A curated and centrally organised event, The festival started a tradition in 2009 of having a new Guest Director each year. Guest Directors usually have some sort of arts background, and have included writers and poets, architects, musicians, choreographers. The best-known Guest Directors have probably been musicians Laurie Anderson (2016) and Brian Eno (2010), actor Vanessa Redgrave (2012), writer Michael Rosen (2013), and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi (2011).

The Festival's opening event is normally a Children's Parade, starting in Trafalgar Street.
