Some of the earliest commercial construction toys consisted of "artificial stone" blocks moulded from resin-bonded powdered stone.

The medium was initially pioneered by the German company Richter's Anchor Stone Blocks, but after World War One the British market for stone block toys tended to be dominated by the home-grown Lotts Bricks company.
