Studebaker started as a blacksmith in Indiana run by two brothers in 1852. The other three brothers joined later, and the expanding firm began to produce automobiles too from 1902, although their horse-drawn vehicles stayed in production until 1920.

The Great Depression saw the company enter receivership, but they recovered in two years and went on to be incredibly successful. Financial difficulties which began in the 50s eventually saw Studebaker cut back, and then cease, automobile production in 1966. The name was picked up by other businesses, as they always are, but it dropped out of use, although the name is preserved in the 5,000 trees planted at the former proving ground premises in the shape of the Studebaker name.
