1. Hand Turned Zoetrope

The original idea behind this hand turned zoetrope was formulated by looking at Anthony Caro's smaller scale sculptures, as well as the more traditional Victorian Zoetropes.

The teams objective throughout the design and making process was to create a toy that was appealing to all generations. The group liked the idea of toys that could be passed down through family members, thus veering away from the disposable nature of modern toys and towards the more bespoke quality of toys from the pre 20th century. Their incentive was to design and produce an item that challenged the traditional notion of other playthings and that invited the player to use their imaginations as well as their hands.

The symbiotic relationship between motion and imagination proved to be very interesting, as the group found that when movement was coupled with imagery the object became captivating and inviting. The illustrations that form the focal point of the toy were a chance for the group to marry art and design with play.
