Caption: "A RAILWAY ON STILTS. A remarkable extension of Volk's Electric Railway from Brighton to Rottingdean was opened in 1896. The carriages were carried about 23 ft above the rail level. The vehicle weighed about 36 tons and could travel at six miles an hour. The gauge was 18ft. The length of the line was some 2¾ miles, and the car moved through 15ft, of water at high tide."
