European glove puppets (Punch and Judy related)

Arch Two , Area 50
Puppet Corner

A group of European hand puppets from a variety of collections. The heads are made of vinyl with cloth bodies. While initially appearing as characters from Punch and Judy, half of the puppets here are actually from Kasper (or Kasperle) a German puppet story/tradition that, while similar to Punch and Judy (through their shared descent from Pulcinella), have their own separate plot structure, characters and story arcs.

While some characters are essentially either from Punch or Kasper due to not appearing in the others' mythos (Punch has Jack Ketch, Kasper has The King) it can be tricky to ascertain which story a policeman puppet belongs to as the character appears in both, and despite their divergent natures the two shows frequently followed the same aesthetic lines in their puppet design.
