1992 - 1992
The museum's Royal Mail Toys Exhibition was on display during 1992.
1992 promotional text:
A comprehensive display of Royal Mail related toys, models and curios illustrating its history from circa ~1830-1947.
A magnificent model of an 1830s Royal Mail coach heads the display and as you cast your eye over the exhibits you may be surprised as the familiar red of the Post Office is replaced by Green or Blue and other colours. The green post-box was the first type and blue was used to signify airmail, both for Post Office cars and vans, as as as post-boxes.
The tinplate Royal Mail vans are pre-war. Note the rare circa ~1911 post-cart attended by a Victorian postman.
The dealers' box of model telephone boxes is particularly rare as these were normally thrown away and the models sold individually.
There are Post Office playsets; postman's badges, includign one form 1840 and a George V badge; tinplate mail coaches for rail transportation; Lucy Attwell cards and much more besides. Don't miss the speedy-looking blue aerodynamic airmail cars of circa ~1930.
1992 news article, Evening Argus, 29th January:
THE LATEST additions to the Sussex Toy and Model Museum get the stamp of approval from director Chris Littledale (pictured right).
Lionel Jones (left) of the National Postal Museum in London, handed over a collection of rare postal toys to mark the issue of a new collection of Royal Mail stamps.
The stamps, on sale today, celebrate bygone days, with pictures of lockets, keys, picture cards and marbles.
The museum, in Trafalgar street, Brighton, already has a collection of 150 postal toys, dating from the last century.
The Post Office toys, including wooden models of a 1784 mail coach guard and a 1793 letter carrier, will be displayed for a year.
