Locomotives with a 2-4-2 wheel configuration.

Although some of the model locos in the museum are based on 2-4-2 originals, none of them (as of January 2020) actually have a 2-4-2 configuration – they are either 0-4-0 or 0-6-0.

Four drivewheels is not a huge number with respect to traction, and toy manufacturers seem to have considered that the cost and complexity of adding a fiddly extra pair of cosmetic wheels to the front and rear wasn't worth it for small shunter locos, which would usually work better as 0-4-0 (with less to go wrong) or 0-6-0 (giving the longer wheelbase, but with more stability and better pulling ability).
