Exhibition date:

A "Polar Bear" soft toy, made by Steiff, Germany, about 1910.

Steiff manufactured a reissued 1990's version of the old polar bear soft toy in the 1990's as a response to the sudden popularity of Daisy Spedden's rediscovered and newly-published book, "Polar the Titanic Bear".

However, the Museum's Steiff polar bear is one of the originals.

At the present time, we don't know of any other ~1910 Steiff polar bears of this type on public display ... in fact, we don't know of any other original surviving bears in existence, anywhere (the one on display in the Steiff Museum is a 1990s reissue), although there are rumours of one that may or may not be stored in a bank vault somewhere.
