Meccano traction engine

BTMM map 072.gif
location:
Arch Two , Area 72
Arch Two, Overhead

A yellow and zinc motorised Meccano traction engine built as a shop display piece, with illuminated bulbs and rotating parts and pistons. It's located in Arch Two, above the entrance to Arch Three.

This model was featured on the front cover of the first issue of the relaunched Meccano Magazine, in January 1968.

The model is powered during Museum hours, but (as of August 2011) currently requires some servicing: the model's pistons still move but most of the "rotating" parts currently don't, and the bulbs need replacing. These models were built with standard Meccano parts, and although the models were expected to survive for years on end being run constantly during shop hours, some parts do tend to need to be replaced after they've been running for four decades.
