Why should we be Making History Fun?

Once upon a time history was important, but more and more the general belief is becoming that history is no longer relevant in our current multi-cultural communities. History is seen by many people as boring, making them think of dusty books rather than people who lived, died and helped shape the world. This has led to a lack of understanding and ultimately a lack of respect for our history which we should instead be proud of. How many young people would vandalise historic monuments if they knew the real history of what happened and why the monuments are there?

However, history has never been more relevant! Throughout history communities have always been multi-cultural, and Britain alone has a colourful patchwork of cultures and history. History belongs to everyone and should be accessible to everyone. Without this opportunity to learn what came before how can we ever expect our communities to evolve?

This is why we are launching Making History Fun in association with History Matters - Pass It On. We want to encourage people to seek out their cultural entitlement and increase their awareness of history and what can be learnt from it. We want to breakdown the barriers so that history is accessible and engaging for everyone from any background and all areas of the community. This is why we are approaching as many museums and heritage centres as possible, to help get as many people back into Museums as possible and of course to MAKE HISTORY FUN!
