A pale gray wooden "Spencer" streamlined A4 locomotive and tender with dark grey lining, from Tomy's "Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway".

The original locomotive

Spencer is an A4 LNER stresmlined locomotive from the 1930s, of the same class as the record-breaking Mallard.

The reason why Spencer is pale grey, is that the first A4s were all finished in grey and silver, with names starting with "Silver...", and were intended to be used with the LNER's "Silver Jubilee" streamlined train. Later A4s were finished in blue and then in BR green.

Location

This is a modern toy that is part of the Museum's "children's play" collection, available for school visits and children's events. It is not normally on display.
