Meccano Army

1972 -

The Meccano Army Multikit set appeared in 1972 after Triang's takeover of Meccano Ltd, and was joined in 1974 by the smaller Meccano Combat Multikit. Like the earlier "Meccano Mechanised Army" set of 1939, these sets gave owners a set of strips and plates in drab army green suitable for building army vehicles. The 1970s sets were essentially a relaunch of the 1939 idea, but with the word "mechanised" omitted as redundant, as by this time nobody seriously expected model army vehicles to be horse-drawn!

The main difference between the Army and later Combat multikits were that the Army kits included a special dedicated drab green "cab" and nice big chunky balloon tyres, whereas the Combat set required one to make their own cab out of more standard drab green parts, and perhaps to beef up the smaller wheels by stacking them "two-deep".
