Leyland Motors was created in 1907 when when the Lancashire Steam Motor Company in Leyland (1896-1907) took over and absorbed Coulthards of Preston (1897-1907),

The Leyland Motor Corporation Limited merged with British Motor Holdings in 1968 to form British Leyland.

The Leyland trucks and buses marques continued under British Leyland, and remained well-respected, partly because they retained a level of authenticity in their branding that was not always obvious with some of the other more interchangeable "BL" vehicle brands. Because Leyland's products were more specialised than the rest of the BL range, one could still be pretty sure that a Leyland truck post-1968 was designed and built by essentially the same people that had been making them pre-1968, in the same factory, with the same design philosophy and values.
