Ironworks that made small cast iron household goods sometimes branched out into making cast and painted model locomotives.
From a buyer's point of view, these cast models were more robust than other types of model, the mode of manufacture was sympathetic to the subject material, and they gave the owner a good excuse to keep a model of a favourite locomotive on their desk.
