J&L Randall (Merit House, Southgate Road, Potters Bar) apparently started out as a manufacturer of small pieces of military electrical equipment (during WW2?), then got into scientific toys and engineering models after the end of the war, and then moved progressively further into more mass-market toys and novelties.

The first group of products (stationary steam engines, microscopes, electric motors etc.) was sold under the name Signalling Equipment Limited (SEL), while the more mass-market toys and novelties were sold under the Merit name.
