Erhard and Söhne

1844 -

Erhard and Söhne (Erhard & Sons) was founded in 1844 by Carl Gottlieb Erhard and his two sons Carl and Julius specifically to create "fired-gilt" gold-plated products that could undercut the high prices charged by specialist gilders.

With Carl and Julius educated in tool-based jewellery-style metalworking - inlaying, chasing and so on – the company assembled skilled experts in a drive to bring industrial and technological innovation to the field, gaining patents for the use of brass inlays and in using gilt brass for dollhouse accessories. With its technical advantages, ability to produce work in larger quantities than one-man gilders and jewellers, and its patents, Erhard & Söhne became the world specialists in this sort of work, producing gorgeous extravagantly and exotically inlaid pieces of small furniture, and carrying out subcontracted production work for other companies such as Märklin, in areas where their specialist expertise was required.
